About The Kemper Foundation
The James S. Kemper Foundation was established in 1942 by its namesake—an insurance businessman and philanthropist—as a means to support his charitable endeavors. Mr. Kemper placed a high value on the communal nature of education and believed learning comes through mentorship and gaining active experience in the world of work. This philosophy encouraged the creation of the Kemper Scholars Program in 1948. The program prepared students for leadership and service in the business world, with a special focus on exploring the insurance industry.
Today, The Kemper Foundation’s initiatives are focused on supporting causes and organizations primarily in the areas of education, health, and community development. In 2021, the Kemper Scholars Program evolved to broaden its scope and offer scholarships and other opportunities to high potential, diverse college students with demonstrated financial need and a strong interest in business, insurance, and finance careers.
